Summer Mosaic Update

July and August are such strange months, the roads are deserted but tube trains, museums and London parks are full to bursting with families and tourists enjoying the summer holidays.  The mosaic world takes a  holiday as well and I have managed to get away myself as it has been very quiet on the mosaic front. I have also taken the chance to have a sort out and tidy my studios ready for the autumn rush – she says hopefully!

P1060130I made this butterfly during summer for my sister’s newly born great niece. I had made her  big sister a pink elephant when she was born 3 years ago so it seemed fair that another mosaic was in order.  I have used quite a few ‘glitter’ tiles so it should really sparkle on her bedroom wall.

Vivien & Kalpina - Log Cabin Spring Tree

Log Cabin Spring Tree

Following on from the fantastic response and reception we got from O’Grady Court on the OPEN Ealing mosaic project, I have volunteered to make them a mosaic to go onto another wall in their lovely rooftop garden. The last voluntary project I did was at the Log Cabin, a children’s charity, so I am more than happy to make a piece for the residents at this lovely sheltered housing organisation. I have had the initial meeting with them and we talked through ideas, where it would be placed etc. After lots of discussion we came up with the final choice of mosaic so it is now up to me to get sketching and decide on the size, colours etc.  Hopefully I shall have some progress pictures for you soon.

I have just received a new commission for 2 stepping stones. I have made several stepping stones in the past, notably my sundials and the ammonite. They are great fun to do and lend themselves well to the mosaic medium. As they are so durable and robust they are ideal for a garden, flowerbed  or patio.  This client has asked if I am able to do 2 horoscope star signs – I think that is a brilliant idea and I am a bit disappointed I hadn’t thought of that idea before myself!  Obviously I said ‘yes’ so I am now looking at sizes, colours, designs etc.

So after the lull of summer comes the storm of new projects – I am looking forward to getting back to work and mosaicing again.

LONDON ACTIVITY: So many of my Blogging Followers have been asking me how I am getting on with the CAPITAL RING walk so here is progress to date:  WalkingWe have now completed 7 stages of the Capital Ring and have crossed the river to north London.  Combining stages 4 & 5 took us from Crystal Palace to Wimbledon Park via Streatham, Tooting and Wandsworth Commons.  Stage 6 was probably one of our favourite routes starting at Wimbledon Park with its massive boating lake and overlooking the City skyline, passing the famous windmill on Wimbledon Common, lovely walking over Putney Heath which took us up into Richmond Park.  Now we felt we were on ‘home territory’ but as we went through Richmond Park we crossed through lovely parts that we didn’t know existed. When we walked down past Pembroke Lodge, through Petersham Meadows and to completion at the river by Richmond Bridge, it was great to be able to hop on a bus to get home. Stage 7 was definately our local patch and the walk took us on a familiar route that we have cycled or walked many, many times. The end of the route was literally ’round the corner’ to home!

We are sure that the Capital Ring route used to come past the bottom of our road so I am wondering if anyone out there has a copy of the Capital Ring book pre the re-print in 2014. If you have, please do get in touch and let me know the old route.

Key Mosaics

My First Mosaic

My First Mosaic

I recently published my Mosaic CV so thought it would be a good idea to show my key mosaic pieces.

This is the first piece I made with Julia, a small coaster. No cutting involved but it still took me all afternoon!

Animal-ZebraThis  ‘Herd of Zebra’ was made from the template I got from the mosaic shop in Bath. It’s the mosaic that got me hooked on this art form. I am still impressed that I was able to make such a complex early piece.

Once I started going to Kitty’s weekly workshop, with her help and guidance, my work really started to develop and I tried lots of new styles and different ideas.

St. Marys Lighthouse

St. Marys Lighthouse

This was the first time I tried to interpret a photo into a mosaic. It was also my first mosaic showing a real life picture. I still find it hard to interpret scenes into mosaics but I think I am getting there.

Why not make yet another, even bigger mosaic to raffle?? Souldn't take too long!

Hollyhocks

‘Hollyhocks’ was my first mosaic using large bathroom tiles. I usually use small mosaic tiles so it was a totally different technique which produced a different style of mosaic. It was raffled for £1 per ticket and raised  £1,250 for the Log Cabin children’s charity.

I think my our work here is done. Thank you LOG CABIN for a great opportunity and fantastic experience.

Trees at the Log Cabin

I worked on a voluntary project  with the Log Cabin producing 11 large, outdoor mosaics.  As well as butterflies, dragonflies and a smily sunshine face, I decided it would be great to finish with a spring and an autumn tree. I had never made anything on this scale before and this is still one of my favourite pictures.  I am really proud of the work I did with them and pleased with the mosaics that I made for them.

Owners Hilary and Pauline

Marple Mosaic for clients Hilary and Pauline

The Marple Mosaic‘ is my largest commission to data .  This was a big challenge for me as I don’t usually do ‘geometric’ pieces.  However, I really enjoyed the discipline of working with the sharp angles and defined spaces.  I am delighted with the finished piece, as are my clients Hillary and Pauline.

These are not ‘key’ as such, but I like them.

REQUEST: Which is your favourite and why?

COMING SOON: A date for your diary.

Rosanna’s Mosaic CV

I am always being asked ‘how did you get into mosaics – have you exhibited – where can I see your work?’  I recently put my mosaic CV up onto the BAMM website so thought it would be a goo idea to show it here as well.

Julia and I did a weekend course with Aimee in her fantastic studio – a day of fused glass and then a day of mosaic, incorporating our glass pieces.

Large Terracotta Pot

Large Terracotta Pot

2008 – September: Following the Ros Waites course I did the odd mirror and pot but didn’t really have a mosaic focus. During a weekend trip to Bath I stumbled across the Mosaic Shop on Poultney Bridge and it was like stepping into an Aladins Cave! A riot of beautiful mosaics tiles in different materials and wonderful colours. They also had templates so I bought a ‘zebra design’ and that gave me my focus. This was the point where I got ‘hooked’ on mosaics, I was off!

2008 – April: My friend Anne had also got interested in mosaics and she suggested we did a course. Did a beginners weekend course with Ros Waites, where I was taught how to cut and place, learnt aout the different materials, techniques and basics of mosaic.

2007 – 29th July:  Met Julia for the first time and she encouraged me to make my first mosaic, a small coaster.

A New Mosaic Studio?

When my ‘special birthday’ was coming up, hubby Alan asked me what I wanted as a ‘special pressie’. Now maybe most ‘ladies of a certain age’ would want jewellery, a spa treat, perfume or to be pampered for the weekend.

P1050061

The New Shed

Well, I knew exactly what I wanted – a new garden shed!

In order to make room in our medium size London back garden, a lot of preparation was needed. An old rockery and a some brick retaining walls had to be demolished, the area then had to be totally flattened, old plants removed, cleared and dug over. Finally, the concrete base had to be made using the old rocks and bricks as hardcore.

P1050044

Laying the concrete base.

We ordered the shed from Harrow Fencing as we had used them before, they are a small family run local independent company, very professional, informative and friendly and they had the exact model I wanted. We were told 6 weeks to delivery which gave us plenty of time – or so we thought! In the end it was ready within 3 weeks so we were on a very tight schedule to get all the preparation done in time for delivery day. Happily the weather was on our side and  we were able to get all the clearance work done and Alan was able to lay the concrete base just in time. It was delivered and erected professionally and quickly  by the guys from Harrow Fencing and it fits in with the rest of the garden really well. I am delighted with it.

Sunshine Step Stone

Sunshine Step Stone by the shed entrance

My sunshine’stepping stone’ welcomes people in. So far we have christened the new arrival  with champagne, had breakfast in there and also evening drinks. I have now moved all my mosaic wood and heavy supplies in as well as my garden tools.  I intend to use it as a potting shed and an outside mosaic studio for grouting and large mosaic making. I need a name for it so that I can make a mosaic sign – something that incorporates mosaics, gardening and maybe a bit of leisure!  Any ideas???

REQUEST: Rosanna’s Retreat, The Craft Cabin, Hendo’s Hideaway? Can you help me come up with a suitable name please. All suitable suggestions will be put forward and maybe we can have a vote.

COMING SOON: Open Studios – Pop Up Ehibition

New Improved Mosaic Website

As part of my January spring clean I have spent quite a lot of time amending and updating this website. Although I already had a mosaic website, I have decided that this is now going to be my main website and I will be directing all traffic to it via business cards, marketing materials etc.

Originally I wanted to use this website as a showcase for my mosaic photographs with a view to attracting some Galleries who may want to display my work. This is still a key aim. I also liked the idea of ‘Blogging’ and although I am very new to it, I seem to have loads of topics to chat about and people seem to like the Blog so I will continue with this.

Good Morning Sunshine

I am now going to use this site to promote other areas of my mosaic work and services, as well as listing useful mosaic contacts. Have a look at the additional pages I have added and let me know what you think. I’d also like you to let me know what else you would like to hear about – anything mosaic orientated is open for discussion. It is very easy for you to send me a message, just press on the ‘Leave a comment’ button at the bottom of this page. I usually reply quite quickly and I love hearing your views, comments and questions.

Mosaic Community Project – The Log Cabin

I have always done a lot of pro-bono work when I worked professionally and a lot of volunteering in my local community. It therefore seemed natural when I started doing something creative, to offer my skills in that area.

LC LogoIn June 2013 I met with Vivien Dymock and Sharon Flynn at the Log Cabin, a children’s charity in West London. After they saw examples of my work and then getting agreement from the Trustees, we agreed I would take on a voluntary project: to design and create a range of mosaics that would go in their sensory garden.

3aMy aim was to make 8 large cut out mosaics and I thought this would probably be a 9 month project. The Ealing Gazette did an article launching the project and I asked for supplies to be donated: wood, mosaic tiles, adhesives and grouts. Small businesses and friends started to donate supplies and money and by August I had enough materials to start the project and make the first piece – a butterfly.

LC Tree 2aWorking with the children on a weekly basis, we ended up making 11 mosaics including another butterfly, a dragonfly, bird, lizard sunshine face, glitter stepping stones as well as 2 seven foot high trees.!

Welcome Sign - Dan and Kalpina

This became a strong community project with different people involved including the children and young people, staff, local business and volunteers. With regular coverage from Ealing Gazette and Ealing Today, word of mouth and ‘friendly persuasion’ 95% of mosaic materials were donated by small business as well as monetary and time donations from friends.

P1030904I made another large mosaic called ‘Hollyhocks’ which was raffled at £1 per ticket and raised £1,250 which will be spent on art materials for the children.

In addition, a group of gardening friends – Nita, Gill and Krys – volunteered to design and create sensory garden beds. Soil and plants were purchased with a very generous discount. After a year of planning, digging and planting during rain, snow and drought,  there are now 3 beautiful and vibrant sensory beds which enhance the playground area and the mosaics.

P1040438On August 6th we put up a plaque to mark the completion of the project: 2 years on – 11 mosaics, 3 sensory garden beds, £1250 from raffled mosaic, lots of hard work and help, plus loads of fun- later!

Thank you Log Cabin for letting me be involved in such a great project.
