Another Mosaic, Another You Tube

P1050883This recently completed piece is called ‘Jennifer Juniper’.  Inspired from the song written by Donovan (Jennifer Juniper sitting very still…….Jennifer Juniper hair of golden flax……Is she dreaming, yes I think so……..Is she pretty, yes ever so), she is a companion piece to Baboushka. She is  30cm and is made from tesserae, mirror tiles and slivers of glass plus there are quite a few embellishments to add a sparkle.

She was meant to be very ethereal and enigmatic. I started with the face features and was really pleased with her dreamy downward look. As I added the hair I realised she was taking on a ‘Klimt’ feel which wasn’t intentional but seemed to suit her. However, when I filled in and grouted her face she suddenly took on a rather cross appearance which has changed the overall effect. As I always say, it is the mosaic that dictates to me not the other way around, a hard thing for a control freak like myself to accept but I am slowly coming to terms with it and learning to go with the mosaic.

She is now complete, polished and shiny – ready for a new home or to go into a Gallery if anyone is interested.

Those lovely ladies at Crafty Beggars have been busy doing more filming and once again I was delighted to have been invited to take part.

Rosanna-HendersonEach month they feature a video on their website called ‘Make of the Month’. For May it is a ‘Decoupage Challenge.’ It was filmed at the South Street Gallery in Isleworth (where I had an exhibition last year) and involved 7 of us Crafty Beggars having a go at decoupage. It was filmed over a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon, all great fun and helped along with generous helpings of Presecco and lots of encouragement from Julie and Wendy.

Although we all started off with the same base piece, we each had our own individual style and the end results are very varied as you will see. This is always the way with art and craft, everyone’s imagination is different and creates a unique piece. You can see the results by going to their website (www.craftybeggars.tv) or watching it on You Tube: http://www.craftybeggars.tv/content/make-month/

P.S.  We went to see Donovan recently at Cadogan Hall.  He was brilliant, looked exactly the same with long curly hair and spent the whole concert sitting crossed legged on a giant bean bag.  Everyone was up dancing to his finale of Mellow Yellow.

Mosaic Poppies

P1050595For this Remembrance weekend I have made 3 poppy mosaics. They will be in the South Street Gallery as Lesley is having a special weekend event.

Here is a reminder of the fantastic poppy art installation that graced the Tower of London last year.  A stunning, moving display that will stay in the mind forever.

LONDON ACTIVITIES:  We have started to walk ‘The Capital Ring‘ which is a 78 mile route around London, divided into 15 sections. Walking through open spaces, nature reserves and woodlands, it passes numerous historic sights and places of interest.

Section 1: Woolwich to Falconwood. Starting by the river at Woolwich going towards the Thames Barrier, branching off into Maryon & Maryon Wilson Parks, past Charlton House, over Woolwich Common and Eltham Common before ascending Oxleas Meadows for spectacular views over London and a well deserved cuppa before catching the train home. A beautiful day and a great start to this walking adventure.

My Next Event – Diary Date

Please put this date in your diary and come along if you can, it would be great to meet you.

Large Terracotta Pot

2008 – September: Following the Ros Waites course I did the odd mirror and pot but didn’t really have a mosaic focus. During a weekend trip to Bath I stumbled across the Mosaic Shop on Poultney Bridge and it was like stepping into an Aladins Cave! A riot of beautiful mosaics tiles in different materials and wonderful colours. They also had templates so I bought a ‘zebra design’ and that gave me my focus. This was the point where I got ‘hooked’ on mosaics, I was off!

2008 – April: My friend Anne had also got interested in mosaics and she suggested we did a course. Did a beginners weekend course with Ros Waites, where I was taught how to cut and place, learnt aout the different materials, techniques and basics of mosaic.

My First Mosaic

2007 – 29th July:  Met Julia for the first time and she encouraged me to make my first mosaic, a small coaster.

Mosaic Art on Display

My aim for this year was to get my work displayed in a Gallery. I am therefore delighted that part way through the year and I am now in 3 venues.

The North East Art Collective is a fantastic, large gallery in the centre of Newcastle that displays the work of over 140 artists. There I have a range of my mosaic mirrors, my long, thin panels and some larger pieces.

Harris + Hoole Coffee Shop in St. Margarets, Twickenham asked me to continue to exhibit my work after I displayed and demonstrated with them for Richmond Open Studios in July. A lovely local coffee shop in a delightful leafy setting, this place has a terrific atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff.   I am showing my long panels, my small wall hangings and some fun pieces.

South Street Gallery is a new, small gallery. Set in picturesque Isleworth in an historical square, this Gallery is set to make an impact in the area as Artisitic Director Lesley had innovative plans for exhibitions and community events. As I have shelf space I am able to display my mosaiced recycled roof tiles, small pictures and coasters.

During my travels over the years I have often felt that mosaic art is either totally missing or poorly represented in galleries and exhibitions. It is therefore very refreshing and rewarding for me to be in these 3 venues that are run by artistic and forward thinking people who are open to mosaic as an art form and willing to try something different. They have all been extremely encouraging and welcoming to me as a mosaic artist and it is great to be working with them.

REQUEST: Do you know of any experimental gallery owners who may be interested in displaying my mosaic art?

COMING SOON: Mosaic Lessons – why not have a go yourself!?
