North East Art Collective Goes LIVE

For the past 2 years I have been displaying my mosaic art in the North East Art Collective in Newcastle.

They first opened the doors to their unique gallery in 2010 and now display the work of over 150 of the North Easts most amazing talents. Tardis like, they have 11 display rooms which showcase art in all mediums.

Ships and Poppies

Hidden in the heart of Eldon Garden, a shopping centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, they offer a ‘not on the high street’ presence. They  are the essence of Art, Culture and Luxury, but unlike most they don’t pick artists for their names and monetary values but select them based on their talent. Standards are high and quality is even higher.

Over the last few months all the artists have been receiving regular emails from Managing Director John and Front of House Manager Gabby, requesting pictures of all our work, sizes, descriptions, artists profile etc. This is because they were working tirelessly on getting the new website up and ready for the launch which took place on Friday 25th August.

Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing

Do have a look at their website – it is a fantastic site, very user friendly and easy to navigate. You can search by artist, price range, medium, style of work. But most importantly, people are now able to buy our artwork on-line! This opens up our potential marketplace literally world wide. Who knows where my mosaics might end up!

Mosaics for Sale

People often ask if they can buy my work and the answer is a resounding YES PLEASE! I do have various outlets and you can always buy direct from me, and of course I do take commissions.

Coasters

Coasters

When I first started to make mosaics all those years ago, I started off with coasters and trivets. They were ideal items to have in a shop – the sort of small, low price item people would buy as a gift or for themselves.  As my work progressed, I moved onto garden pots and small wall hangings, again ideal for a shop so it was great to be in All Original, a local shop specialising in designer/maker items.

Range of mirrors

Range of mirrors

I them started making mirrors and door numbers and once they went into the shop I received lots of requests for commissions. Again, they made perfect gifts and were very personalised for the recipient. After 2 years I decided it was time to leave All Original as I ended up having to make to sell rather than make to develop and progress my skills as a mosaic artist.

9 years on from that first, tentative mosaic and I am still learning and hopefully progressing all the time. I have moved on to making much larger items for both indoor and outdoors. Wall hangings, pictures, glass-on-glass and now I am doing a lot of work on slate. I now work mostly to commission as each piece is very specific to the buyers requirements. I am in 2 Galleries in Northumberland and I would like to find a local Gallery as another outlet to display and sell my work. If you know of anywhere or anyone that you think may appreciate my style of work, please get in touch via my Contact Page.

CAPITAL RING

We now have the 9th stage of the Capital Ring under our walking boots. Starting at our most local point, we started to climb towards north west London. I suppose that the clue was in the description: Horsenden HILL, Sudbury HILL and finally Harrow-on-the………HILL.  Yes, it was one of the highest legs of the walk, also the furthest point, 10 miles from Charing Cross. A great section though and from now on we are into unknown territory.  We are half way now and hope to finish within a year.

I am always being asked ‘how did you get into mosaics – have you exhibited – where can I see your work?’  I recently put my mosaic CV up onto the BAMM website so thought it would be a goo idea to show it here as well.

Julia and I did a weekend course with Aimee in her fantastic studio – a day of fused glass and then a day of mosaic, incorporating our glass pieces.

Large Terracotta Pot

Large Terracotta Pot

2008 – September: Following the Ros Waites course I did the odd mirror and pot but didn’t really have a mosaic focus. During a weekend trip to Bath I stumbled across the Mosaic Shop on Poultney Bridge and it was like stepping into an Aladins Cave! A riot of beautiful mosaics tiles in different materials and wonderful colours. They also had templates so I bought a ‘zebra design’ and that gave me my focus. This was the point where I got ‘hooked’ on mosaics, I was off!

2008 – April: My friend Anne had also got interested in mosaics and she suggested we did a course. Did a beginners weekend course with Ros Waites, where I was taught how to cut and place, learnt aout the different materials, techniques and basics of mosaic.

2007 – 29th July:  Met Julia for the first time and she encouraged me to make my first mosaic, a small coaster.

Mosaic Art on Display

My aim for this year was to get my work displayed in a Gallery. I am therefore delighted that part way through the year and I am now in 3 venues.

The North East Art Collective is a fantastic, large gallery in the centre of Newcastle that displays the work of over 140 artists. There I have a range of my mosaic mirrors, my long, thin panels and some larger pieces.

Harris + Hoole Coffee Shop in St. Margarets, Twickenham asked me to continue to exhibit my work after I displayed and demonstrated with them for Richmond Open Studios in July. A lovely local coffee shop in a delightful leafy setting, this place has a terrific atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff.   I am showing my long panels, my small wall hangings and some fun pieces.

South Street Gallery is a new, small gallery. Set in picturesque Isleworth in an historical square, this Gallery is set to make an impact in the area as Artisitic Director Lesley had innovative plans for exhibitions and community events. As I have shelf space I am able to display my mosaiced recycled roof tiles, small pictures and coasters.

During my travels over the years I have often felt that mosaic art is either totally missing or poorly represented in galleries and exhibitions. It is therefore very refreshing and rewarding for me to be in these 3 venues that are run by artistic and forward thinking people who are open to mosaic as an art form and willing to try something different. They have all been extremely encouraging and welcoming to me as a mosaic artist and it is great to be working with them.

REQUEST: Do you know of any experimental gallery owners who may be interested in displaying my mosaic art?

COMING SOON: Mosaic Lessons – why not have a go yourself!?

Northumberland Trip

St. Marys Lighthouse

St. Marys Lighthouse

We have just got back from a 2 week stay in Northumberland. We had incredibly hot weather which was great as my friend Linda came to stay for a few days and it is always nicer showing people round when it is sunny and bright.

We went to a couple of concerts including one of only 3 UK productions of Sting’s ‘The Last Ship’. This is a musical play written by and starring Sting, about the closing down of the shipyards in Tyneside, where he was bought up. It was staged at The Sage and I was delighted to get the last pair of tickets. We had the added bonus of seeing Jimmy Nail who took on a key role in the show. I also managed to sneak in a matinee of Matthew Bourne’s ‘The Car Man’. An excellent modern ballet loosely based on Bizet’s Carmen.  A fantastic production: amazing dancing, raunchy, great staging and all set to that fabulous Bizet score.

Mosaic Mirrors

I had a few visits to the North East Art Collective gallery where I am now displaying my mosaic art. They had requested some of my mirrors so I took in a selection to chose from and they took all 6, along with 2 of my outdoor lizards on stones. I now have 17 pieces  on display in the gallery.

Catherine and John, who run and own the Gallery, are really nice and friendly and I am delighted to have a new venue and audience who can see (and hopefully buy) my work. It is lovely to have a north and south outlet, I now just need somewhere in the middle of the country!

Lizard on Stone

Lizard on Stone

I am now back in London and the holiday is over as mosaic work has to continue. I need to get everything together for ARThouse – Richmond Open Studios and I also need to continue with the commission piece.

Busy, busy, busy but that is how I like it!

REQUEST: Does anyone have any connections with Galleries in the Cotswolds, or Malvern area? If so, a link or introduction would be great.

COMING SOON: ARThouse – Richmond Open Studios and Harris & Hoole.

I am delighted that I have just got my work into a Gallery in Newcastle  called ‘The North East Art Collective’.

Multi Media Panels

The Gallery houses work from over 100 artists who specialise in a range of arts including Watercolours, Oils, Photography, Glass, Ceramics, Furniture Design, Textiles, Sculpture. They now have a new mosaic artist as well!

3 Individual Panels

3 Individual Panels

Being in this type of Gallery means I can display and hopefully sell some of my indoor hanging mosaic art, and some larger pieces as well.  I am hoping that my slim multi media panels will be successful alongside my abstract pieces. Do go and have a look at their website and have a look at my artists profile listed under Rosanna Henderson.

I am now going into my third year at the All Original shop in Ealing where I sell smaller items and outdoor pieces – mirrors, trivets, coasters, small pictures and door numbers are all popular lines and regular sellers. I can also promote any local activities I am involved in.

Although I haven’t gone international yet, I can certainly say that I span the north/south divide!

REQUEST:  If you have any Northern contacts, please encourage them to pop into the Gallery
